Orlando Fashion Week 2017

Daishawn Franklin

Located in the heart of Florida, during the height of the spring season, Orlando Fashion Week at the City Art Factory took the area by storm. With its first ever show taking place in August of 2011, the 2017 show marked 8 years since Tina Bridges and Ramona Paulino, professors at The International Academy of Design and Technology were inspired by the experience of Miami Fashion Week and decided to create their own.

Unfortunately, Ramona passed away from liver cancer before they could ever make this dream a reality, but Tina was determined to make it happen. Together with two of her former students, Tara Cadman and Yadira Gonzalez, Tina made the dream come true.

Though the show is currently small, only in its 6th year, the team strives only to create something bigger and more spectacular every year. The goal of reaching attendance of 500 people per night and creating a show of three nights or longer has them striving each year to create something even better. At this point, however, the Orlando Fashion Week team is proud of the platform they create for local fashion designers to showcase their work and the ability they have to create something truly unique and inspiring.

From start to finish the show takes approximately 6 months of hardcore planning, communication, negotiation and coordination between the designers themselves, models and everyone else involved. But even more complicated is the process of obtaining sponsors to help support the experience. Still, each year the show becomes something even bigger and better and the team couldn’t imagine anything else. As a non-profit that strives to help others achieve their dreams, this fashion week is dedicated to fun, fashion and respect for every member of the group.

It’s up to every member of this illustrious team to make sure the show goes off without a hitch, from the makeup artists and volunteers who work behind the scenes, to the designers and the models who are front and center. It’s thanks to every one of them that this year’s Orlando Fashion Week created quite a stir and, hopefully, launched several designers and models into the public eye.
